Education System That Promotes Meaningful Learning

Once the human knowledge highway is built and the advantages of understanding learning is verified, what can we do to better promote meaningful learning? We would have to turn to mesoscopic, which can be seen from for example [teaching-and-learning-level-annotation] (/research/teaching-and-learning-level-annotation/) research, and macroscopic studies based on and from the microscopic studies of educational systems.

In other research directions, we have been mainly focused on the micro aspect, i.e. what to teach and learn and how to teach and learn. In this research direction, we will seek for necesary adjustment to the education management system to better promote meaningful learning. For example, we can look into

  • How to educate next-generation teachers to be aware of and be capable of making use of meaningful learning,
  • How to make students, teachers, parents and also education administrators to be more willingly to use meaningful learning.

For that we may consider

  • Assessment of schools, teachers and students,
  • Professional development system to support schools, teachers and even students (on learning skills)
  • Financial policies to support schools, teachers and students,
  • Or even the role of the school under this new model of education, where learning resources have been systematically attached to the human knowledge highway and self-guided exsperted-supported meaningful learning is the main approach of learning.

Of course, in order to perform these macroscopic studies better, we still need to understand its status quo, for example,

  • A survey study on “where teachers' time goes”,
  • A study on correlation between students' scores in elementary, middle school, high school and college courses,
  • A study on correlation between knowledge (all levels, including also skills and ways of thinking) learned in colleges/universities and knowledge needed and used in work and life after graducation,
  • A study on whether or nor education research, using research papers as a procy, helps teachers/students to teach/learn better.
